Ma facciamo ordine: si pu\u00f2 dire che esistono due tipi di peristalsi. Il primo tipo \u00e8 quello che serve a <strong>rimescolare<\/strong>, e non a spingere molto in avanti il contenuto dell\u2019intestino per riassorbire vitamine e altre sostanze. E poi c\u2019\u00e8 un secondo tipo di peristalsi, quello pi\u00f9 comunemente noto, che ha il potere di far avanzare con decisione la massa. Queste contrazioni conducono allo stimolo di evacuare e avvengono solo tre o quattro volte al giorno, soprattutto in coincidenza con il risveglio, grazie alla posizione eretta e alla distensione dello stomaco. Non a caso, per quelle persone che funzionano \u201ccome un orologio\u201d l\u2019appuntamento fisso con l\u2019evacuazione \u00e8 il primo mattino. La condizione indispensabile affinch\u00e9 tutto ci\u00f2 accada \u00e8 che vi sia massa, in quanto quest\u2019ultima funge da stimolo alla peristalsi.
